(More customer reviews)I have been using this oil for almost a year. It leaves my skin and hair very soft. It does not have that heavy coconut scent that artificially scented products have. Just the natural light coconut scent that is all its own. Very pleasant and not overpowering. I have given samples to friends and family who are also very pleased with it-to the point where I have been asked for information on how and where they can purchase this oil. I use it for my hair, body, cooking and everything else...to include oil-pulling, which I just started today and my mouth does feel a lot cleaner. Let's see where it goes. This size is also much less costly compared to smaller sizes.

(More customer reviews)I surprised myself at how versatile this product is. We use it for all of our roasting and baking. Gives our food a great flavor and does not burn our glass or stainless steel pans. At first I used too much and went through 2 jars quickly, but then I used just a little (1/2 - 1 teaspoon) to coat our pans, and that seems to be just the right amount. It took a long long time to use the 3rd jar. We use coconut oil as our primary spread and the cooking oil is an adjunct. I am reticent to use olive oil because how quickly it becomes rancid sitting on shelfs. But I still combine olive oil with DR. Fife's cooking oil if the heat is over 350 degress. Dr Fife's cooking oil is stable and is really much cheaper and healthier that olive oil, in my opinion. I recommend this product whole-heartedly!!

(More customer reviews)If you want a coconut oil to take as a supplement for health reasons, go with an organic virgin coconut oil. If you want a healthier oil for cooking without the coconut taste, LouAna's coconut oil is great. I used it for frying, as it does not leave the finished product all greasy. It also makes excellent theater-tasting popcorn in my whirley pop. I contacted LouAna because I was concerned about "how" the oil was refined. They replied saying they do not use chemicals in the refining process, only filters and heat. While it's most likely less expensive to buy a refined coconut oil in bulk quantities from various businesses on the web, I can buy this at Walmart or HEB and I do not feel that it is any less quality than the other refined coconut oils.

When my husband and I went to the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company in Pittsburgh, PA, the olive oil buyer guided us through our first olive oil purchase. She had us eat the olives that went into different kinds of olive oil and then pick the olives we liked best. Our first purchase of Zoe was the result. It is an olive oil with a distinctly buttery taste. I use it in baking cakes whenever oil or melted butter is called for. It tastes great! Absolutely great! Plus, it's heart healthy, which butter is not. Sigh. Other olives, particularly Italian olives that are made into olive oil are very peppery. Hence, their oil is peppery. This might be what other people are talking about when they say they don't like Zoe. Zoe is not a bit peppery. So please, you must try for yourself in this case. It is not a good idea to take anyone else's product review for olive oil to heart. (a pun!) You must decide what you like in an olive oil and buy according. Also, I want to mention that the buttery taste stays there even through a saute. We bought different types of Italian olive oil in smaller bottles that same first time at the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company, and then we came home and made fried eggs with all of them. In that venue the taste of the olive oils really came through and Zoe kept that buttery taste. Good eating!

I keep the tub in the basement and have a smaller amount in the kitchen - not in the fridge, there it becomes very hard.

(More customer reviews)I've tried a few different brands of extra-virgin coconut oil, and for the most part I'm equally satisfied with them all. Despite the marketing hype, coconut oil brands within each category (virgin, refined, hydrogenated) are very similar. I should specify the qualities I look for in a coconut oil: I want a coconut oil with a rich coconut aroma and taste, maximum nutrition, and minimal processing. For these reasons, I always select an organic, extra-virgin, cold-pressed oil.
I'm pleased that this Nutiva Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil provides these qualities along with an easy-to-find "packed on" and "best before" date. The jars I ordered in late January 2011 were packed on September 13, 2010, and the "best before" date is September 13, 2012. Stored correctly (cool, dark location, no refrigeration needed), this nutrient-dense oil stays fresh for two years. It smells and tastes great--coconutty and slightly sweet.
According to Nutiva, no hexane is used in the processing of this oil. Hexane is a petroleum-derived solvent used in all kinds of industrial applications, from shoe manufacturing to roofing. Interestingly, because hexane's primary molecular structure is carbon, it can be passed off as "organic." Do a little research; "cold-pressed," "organic," AND "hexane-free" are key considerations when selecting your coconut oil for nutrition purposes.
I'm not as pleased with the plastic jars. In fact, I took off a star as a result of the plastic packaging. I feel that a quality organic oil should be stored in a glass jar, and ideally a dark one to reduce oxidation. I've actually selected coconut oils specifically because they come in glass jars, and might have bypassed this product if I hadn't found it on sale at a good price. I put this information in the review to aid those of you who are looking for a coconut oil in a glass jar. Of course, at this larger size, you might prefer a plastic jar to eliminate some of the weight, but for storage purposes, glass might be best.
